Those "Color of the Year" reports? All wrong. The in color for 2017 isn't Sherwin-Williams intense "Poised Taupe" or Benjamin Moore's rich plummy "Shadow." According to research examined by the data-focused real estate site HomeLight, the color that should be on your walls is — and always will be ― beige. Yes, beige. The color that some consider a compromise, or even not a real color choice at all.

Writer Alexa Collins looked at data points from studies that analyzed emotional responses to color and surveyed top-ranking real estate agents for their observations. First, Collins analyzed the current favorite neutral, grey. Though undeniably on-trend, research said that the color was associated with negative thoughts. Green was a top contender as the best color to paint your home, since rooms painted the hue were found to encourage concentration. But, green was also found to be distracting to men.

However, both the data and real estate experts pointed to one color: Beige. It's a hue that's distraction-free and it doesn't inspire a negative reaction. Real estate agents love it, because would-be buyers can focus more on the property rather than the color of the walls. Can't argue with that. But, we have to admit to being the tiniest bit disappointed in the findings. After all, there's a whole world of color out there.

We're not entirely alone in this vague anti-beige sentiment. Designer Kyle Schuneman, advocates against the neutral for your home's main anchor pieces: "Go with beige and the whole room will be rooted in bland color. When you opt for bold color, the entire room has a strong point of view." Then there was that time the Australian government set out to find the most unattractive colors to use on cigarette warning packages in an attempt to gross people out of their habit, and beige made the top five.

Looking back at our own recent interviews with designers, it looks like we might have missed the obvious signs for the comeback. "Beige is classic. It's sophisticated, it's soothing," said designer John De Bastiani in a February 2016 interview. "It isn't trendy, and neither am I. People might call it the safe choice, but I say, What's wrong with being safe?"

Maybe we'll have to give beige a second chance.
