Lighting

Updated February 22, 2016.
Modern design is not for everyone, but as of late I have noticed a huge surge in the integration of modern touches in interiors, especially the kitchen.  There is just something cool about the juxtaposition of sleek details sprinkled in a more traditional or transitional space. In general the modern vibe is very clean, simple and sleek and this aesthetic can be found in a slew of different elements that you can easily implement into your kitchen.
First up, lighting. Lighting is an important element in the kitchen both functionally and visually.  The fixture or fixtures you select will definitely set the tone for the overall feel of your space. There are an abundance of options, at varying price points and aesthetics that could fall in to the realm of "modern". In this kitchen a funky brass fixture with sleek lines and exposed bulbs  really makes a strong statement in this space. And to keep things from going too modern note how the fixture hangs from a decorative ceiling medallion.

Hardware

Cabinet hardware is known as the jewelry of the kitchen. Not only does it offer a great opportunity to layer on a different texture, but the style you choose can really dictate the overall vibe of your cabinet fronts. There are several factors that cause a piece of hardware to read modern. Size, installation orientation and style. The size of the hardware you select can really drive the vibe, from really undersized or minimal pieces like a tab pull to oversized items like large appliance pulls throughout, going with either extreme will result in a modern feel.

How you orient the hardware, specifically pulls on a cabinet door is also powerful. all hardware is installed horizontally along the bottom of the door this is going to read much more modern than if the same piece of hardware is installed horizontally. And finally style, the cleaner and simpler the hardware, the more modern it will feel.

Countertop Edge Details

The edge you choose for your countertops is more important than you might think. if you have ever picked out countertops than you know that once you select the material you want, the next decision is the edge detail. Most companies have a pretty wide assortment of choices from big and detailed like a double ogee to sleek and simple like a pencil edge. One of my favorite edge details right now, and one that will leave your kitchen feeling a bit more modern is the 6cm clean mitered edge as pictured here.

You can put this edge on a more traditional cabinet and poof your kitchen instantly feels more sleek.

Cabinet Details

Cabinet details play a huge part in the overall aesthetic of a kitchen. From cabinet doors and trim moulding to wood species and finish selections any one of these elements can really drive the design style of the space. Simpler doors, such as slab or shaker with a clean finish, be it paint or stain will read much more modern than a cabinet door with applied moulding and a glazed finish. The same goes for trim details.

A simple cove crown is much more modern than a crown with rope or dental moulding. It is important to consider just how modern you want to go. Slab doors with no moulding can read VERY clean and modern, which is not bad, but if you are going for a look somewhere between ultra modern and traditional, try shaker doors with a finial hinge and slab drawers like the kitchen pictured to keep things from getting too understated and contemporary.

Windows

Steel windows are just cool and visually powerful in any space. I find that the integration of these windows in a room, especially a kitchen brings about a very clean and modern feel. The dark steel looks especially clean and sleek in a kitchen with white accents such as the wall or cabinet color. If replacing your windows is not on the agenda, the same effect can come from simply painting your windows black or dark gray yourself.

Waterfall Countertop

Another cool way to let your countertops modernize your space is a waterfall edge. A waterfall edge is when the countertop continues down the side of your cabinet.  This look is not only cool and modern but also a great way to showcase a beautiful stone like marble.
